Save on Tolls When Renting a Car

I didn’t write a post last week because we were traveling with our grandson (Noah) to Morocco. What an excellent experience! Not only was it a time for strengthening family bonds but watching him being exposed to new cultures and different environments was beyond words. I highly recommend multigenerational family travel when you can.

On to this week’s post: If you have plans to fly to Orlando, FL and rent a car anytime soon, here is some information I ran across recently that may be helpful to you. In addition to the basic fee rental car companies charge, customers get hit with multiple additives like the device for collecting tolls. Rental car companies can charge for these devices whether you actually go through tolls or not. Now, the Central Florida Expressway Authority has come up with a program where you can get a FREE temporary toll pass for your rental car which will save you from participating in the rental car company program. With this Visitor Toll Pass, you can save money by paying the lowest toll rates throughout Florida toll roads. Click here to get the details on how you can participate. For now, this program is only available at Orlando International Airport.

On the other hand, if you already have an electronic toll transponder (like EZ Pass) for your personal vehicle, did you know you can carry it with you to use in your rental car? First, check to see if EZ Pass is accepted in the area you are traveling. If it is, you can decline the use of the rental company’s toll service. As soon as you get your rental car, add the rental car details into your EZ Pass app and temporarily affix your transponder to your front windshield. Your personal transponder can be used anywhere EZ Pass is accepted, not only in Orlando. Here is a map showing all the areas where EZ Pass can be used.

If you have further questions on how this all works, let me know. I’m happy to give more details on the process.
